Providence, RI. (January 17, 2007). The RI Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF), in collaboration with the Continuity of Care Group, is sponsoring a half-day Training Institute on Youth Who Sexually Abuse for residential care workers and others who work directly with this population.

The reason for training on this issue is clear. In the United States, it is estimated that juveniles account for up to 20% of forcible rapes and almost 50% of child molestations committed each year1. Residential care workers in juvenile facilities need to be properly prepared to identify and address behaviors related to sexual abuse.

This session is the first of five training sessions serving as the core curriculum for training residential program workers to establish the highest standard of practice for all providers of services for youth who exhibit sexually abusive behaviors.

The Institute, which is not open to the public, will be held in the Student Union Ballroom at Rhode Island College from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and repeated from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring leading experts on topics including:

  • Youth who exhibit sexually abusive behavior
  • Characteristics of these juveniles
  • Risk factors
  • Research and promising practices
  • Collaborative approaches to research and management
