PROVIDENCE, RI (March 24, 2009) – Today, Day One distributed a toolkit entitled "Taking a Stand: A
Toolkit to End Sexual Violence in Schools" with comprehensive information about sexual violence prevention to all Rhode Island schools.
"Attitudes about sexual harassment, intolerance, and hate form at an early age," said Peg Langhammer, executive director of Day One. "School administrators and teachers have great influence with children, are
good role models, and are a valued resource to impart positive information to combat the negative."
The toolkit includes school policy standards, lesson plans, statistics about sexual violence among children
and teens, community resources, and much more. It is a compilation of Day One's experience as the leading provider of sexual violence prevention education in R.I. and includes policies, resources and
prevention strategies collected from across the nation. The toolkit project is funded through a grant from the Rhode Island Department Health with Preventative Health & Health Services Block Grant Funds.
Day One has been the state leader in reducing the prevalence of sexual abuse and violence in Rhode Island. Established in 1973 as the R.I. Rape Crisis Center, Day One is the only agency in R.I. organized
specifically to deal with issues of sexual assault as a community concern. The agency is well known and respected for its advocacy, education and support services.
