WHAT'S IT ABOUT?
Day One of Rhode Island is inviting teenagers to make their voices heard by creating an advertisement for TV addressing sexual violence prevention.

WHO CAN ENTER THE CONTEST?
Any team of three or four teens aged 13-19 who reside in Rhode Island and have written permission of a parent or guardian. At least one male must be on each team.

Contest packets are available below and provide educational materials on sexual violence prevention concepts to help create the ad. Contest workshops are not required; however, they are designed to educate teens and facilitate discussions about preventing sexual violence.

WHAT DO TEAMS WIN?

  • First place winning TV ad will be aired on Fox Providence, and several Cox cable stations throughout the month of April!
  • Winning team will receive a $500.00 cash prize!
  • Second place team will win $200.00.
  • Third place team will win $100.00
  • All finalists will receive an invitation to attend the Your Voice, Your View press event.
  • All participants receive a certificate of participation.
  • In appreciation for their participation, each teacher will receive a voucher for a free training (Education Dept. w/ CEU's) at Day One and is also entered in a raffle that will be awarded in April.

CONTEST WORKSHOPS
Workshops are being scheduled now through Friday, February 5, 2010. Entry deadline is Friday, February 26, 2010. The number of free workshops each school can receive may be limited based on availability. Early scheduling is recommended!

WORKSHOPS REQUIREMENTS

  1. All teens and teachers participating in the Your Voice, Your View workshops will need to complete a pre-workshop questionnaire prior to the workshop. Day One staff will come to distribute questionnaires at your convenience. Teens will also be asked to fill out a post-questionnaire 2-3 months later. A few teens may be asked to participate in focus groups about their experience in the contest.

The workshop consists of a 60-minute workshop: a video and interactive discussion and power point presentation. Your Voice, Your View staff can bring equipment if the school/organization does not have equipment available. This year's program focus is on sexual harassment and bystander intervention.

  1. The program will provide information packets and resources about contest guidelines and examples of student entries from previous years.
  2. The contest must be given by the classroom teacher as a class assignment where students form teams and create an ad to prevent sexual violence. A lesson plan and a team worksheet will be provided. Although all teams are not required to enter their ad, at least one entry must be submitted from each classroom that receives a workshop.

For more information contact Hilary Jones at 421-4100 X 161, or hjones@dayoneri.org.

This was a great program! Students were very engaged and interested in the topics discussed.  We will definitely participate next year!   -Teacher

The workshops were very educational and the contest activity was a great opportunity for students to discuss issues dealing with healthy relationships with other students. I hope more schools are taking advantage of this program!   - Principal

What I liked about the program was the opportunity it gave to the male students to get involved and be positive role  models for other males.   - Teacher
